California State of Emergency Alert

California State of Emergency Alert

An ‘abnormal,’ monsoon-like weather pattern hits Southern California in late August. A hot and dry air mass forms over Southern California while another, cold air mass forms closer to the West Coast. The two air masses collide with different extents in each part of the state, and a front develops. The front moves into Los Angeles and the Los Angeles basin during the day, dissipating later in the evening. Southern California is warmest in the late afternoon and early evening. Hotter, drier weather brings more drought in southern California.

FULL EPIDEMICAL WARNING

A full Epidemic Warning System alert has been issued for the entire state of California until at least 12 a.m. Pacific Time. The alert means that a serious outbreak could develop within that period.

In an isolated case, it’s possible for a small cluster of cases to develop into a full-blown outbreak.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS FOR EXTENDED COVERAGE

In response to the threat of a severe outbreak, the state activated its state of emergency. All nonessential state government, non-emergency state government and vital emergency service employees, as well as critical infrastructure and facilities, are ordered to stay in their homes, except where they are needed for service on the state’s behalf.

Statewide essential services continue.

Public health officers recommend that individuals and their families take the following precautions to reduce the risk of becoming ill, and to protect themselves and their families.

Reduce your risk by:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom. Wearing gloves or disposable face masks may reduce the risk of respiratory diseases.

If you’re sick with a respiratory illness, do not go to a public place, including shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, or shelters. Continue to stay at home until you have recovered. If you do go out with others, don’t drink alcoholic beverages or eat or discuss topics of personal importance that you are not supposed to discuss. Cover
