Karen Bass, New York City’s Next Mayor, Says She’ll Run for President

Karen Bass, who is in line to become New York City’s next mayor, used the words “congratulations queen!” to capture the pride she feels after her election victory and her plans for the new year.

During an interview Wednesday with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Bass was asked by host Joe Scarborough if she would consider running for president in a second term. She responded that she would consider making a run if the party she is running for won’t take her up on the offer.

At the same time, she said that she intends to focus on what she can do for New Yorkers instead of what she can do for the U.S. political system, because “I think our issues are more local than that.”

For Bass, a second term is the next step in what she has said she is going to do.

“The next step is to complete all of the changes we’ve begun in a way that will make for a stronger city and a better city,” she said. “We’re also going to start a national campaign for the next mayor, because of course we were a national campaign from the beginning.”

“Well, here’s the good news,” Bass continued. “And let me share with you guys, the good news. I think I’m going to be able to start from a clean slate and I’m not going to have the baggage that I have had to clear and that is having my son and daughter, who are now adults, live under my roof for a period of time. He’s still too young to do that, so that’s something that I am going to have to sort through and hopefully through the grace of God I will be able to address. But I am hopeful that we will be able to work together to ensure that we have a city that is stronger and better for all New Yorkers who have had to sacrifice to make this city a great city for everyone.”
