Hurricane Ian Started a Clock Ticking for Dialysis Patients in Miami

Hurricane Ian started as a tropical storm on Sept. 28 and weakened over the next few weeks to a strong Category 3 as it continued eastward into Florida. On Oct. 16, Hurricane Ian made landfall near Miami and then turned northward in the Florida Keys. On Oct. 18, Hurricane Ian became a major hurricane and nosediveed into the Everglades as a Category 2 storm.

The Miami-Dade County Public Health Department started working to evacuate patients from Dialysis Clinics immediately after Hurricane Ian. However, patients continued to show up for appointments on Oct. 20. A few of these patients, including one patient with a family member who lives in Miami-Dade, had been waiting since Oct. 16 for a Friday session to start. The patient’s dialysis treatment, which normally takes four hours, now takes eight hours as patients had to wait to turn in their scheduled appointments.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said

On Oct. 20, the Miami-Dade County Mayor’s Office also began working to accommodate these patients. The mayor’s office had been waiting for two weeks to find out how many patients who were seeking dialysis treatments would be affected by the storm and the hospital did not have any estimates on what the storm would bring to the city.

On Oct. 21, Mayor Gimenez and Miami-Dade County Public Health Department officials met with the patient whose family member now lives in Miami and who was waiting to have dialysis treatment. Mayor Gimenez helped to finalize the evacuation plan for this patient and she received an all-clear when Hurricane Ian was expected to pass through the area.
