Serena Williams’ last hurrah at home grand slam headlines fascinating two weeks of tennis in Los Angeles

When you win a grand slam it isn’t quite the same as winning a major tournament. But when you lose it is quite another story. There is an expectation that comes with it. That’s because when you lose, it’s a huge blow.

But what happened last month at Wimbledon as Serena Williams lost her third Wimbledon was not her last hurrah at this grand slam. It wasn’t even a significant fall in Grand Slam form — after all, Williams won the Australian Open and was in the semifinals at Wimbledon. But the final two losses in her Grand Slam run, which began in June, have both been more than significant.

And they will add to the pressure on Williams to return from the injury she sustained on May 20 in Indian Wells because of a hip flexor strain, the same injury that she had earlier in the year. She will not play in any of her planned events next season.

There has been speculation since Williams’ first two losses that she will be out for the rest of the year.

“I think she would be silly to go another three months without making a dent into the big-time of anything,” said David Levy at the Wall Street Journal Sports blog. “If this is it, she doesn’t have a leg to stand on. She’ll have to come back even if it’s a month or two longer than she had hoped.”

It will be interesting to see if the long-term ramifications of this injury will change what players are thinking about when they enter their age-32 seasons. Is it a chance to go out and perform like some of the athletes they look up to? Or is it a chance to prepare for a longer career?
