On the back of a solid year in Beijing, 21-year-old American Wu Yibing will be making his first ever appearance at the US Open when he plays the first round of his career against Argentine Eduardo Schwank in a match scheduled for 1.30pm local time at the O’Connor Convention Center.

It has been seven years since the last Chinese player has reached the third round of any major on the PGA Tour.

Now, after a solid year on the PGA Tour in China, and as the second Chinese man to ever make the third round (after Yang Yong-eun in 2007), Wu has set his sights on making history in his home country.

But before he is able to break the record of his idol, Wang Yi (which stood for 16 years), he must go through the qualifying and qualifying playoff and get his card for the Open.

Wu will be paired with Swiss Martin Kaymer, but in a sign of the depth of the US Open field, he is likely to have a chance to face another local player, American Jason Dufner, on the first two days.

Wu, currently ranked 65 in the world, is just hoping to gain some more experience in front of a home crowd.

“It’s been a great year in China,” he said. “I’ve been playing a lot, so I really like this kind of golf.

“So far, I’ve only played three rounds in China. That’s because it’s just a short season of the year. I’ve been on the PGA Tour for a while, so I thought I knew everything going into the US Open.
