Making a point to do this daily can slowly turn into a habit that you do involuntarily. You may be surprised by just how much better you feel.

Meditation is a great tool for helping you to live in the moment. It encourages you to focus on how you feel at a given time, which provides a healthy perspective. Perhaps you follow a rigid schedule daily.

If this is your case, consider switching things up from time to time. For example, you may wake up before your alarm clock goes off to watch the sunrise or allow your children to stay up past their bedtime so you can enjoy a movie together as a family.

If you typically order the same thing every time you go to a restaurant, consider trying something new. Gratitude is critical for improving mental health. It is a way of looking at what you have instead of what you do not.

If you want to try to implement a greater sense of gratitude in your life, consider keeping a gratitude journal. This can be done with a physical journal or even kept on a digital device. But finding joy in the little things is a choice. I spent one year at a Canadian college years ago. This indeed seemed lacking in meaning and purpose. In the beginning, I dreaded my student work. This was not my idea of the pursuit of happiness. Yet as the days progressed, I chose to find joy in hearing the echo of my voice against the tile walls of the restrooms as I sang my favorite song.

Then it became a goal to see how clean I could make the showers for the feet of those who would use them. It actually became a beautiful thing as my feel-good hormones began to kick in.

By the end of the school year, I did not mind cleaning the restrooms. It gave me time alone to think and talk to God as I worked. But many pieces combined together add up to something big. Likewise, every little thing that we find joy in builds a strong infrastructure that helps prevent the collapse of our emotional well-being.

God has given us so many little things that make life meaningful. And our relationship with Him gives us great purpose.
